Were They Kings?
Three Wise Men, Three Magi, or Three Kings? I’ve heard them referred to in all these ways and I’ve seen them depicted with crowns or turbans on their heads. I procrastinated on this post because of the 3 Kings reference because I don’t know that I can agree on this title but they are so often depicted wearing crowns that it’s hard to come up with a craft that doesn’t include a crown. Even in my family’s nativity set the three wise men are wearing crowns on their heads.
I personally struggle with thinking of them as kings and the Bible doesn’t ever say specifically that there were three of them either. However, it does reference the three gifts.
We have become reliant on historical record and tradition which identifies the three by name and suggests that at least one of the them was King of Arabia and all three have been deemed saints by the Catholic Church. So with that, I’ll accept that while the Bible doesn’t say that they were kings, it doesn’t say that they weren’t either.
Lessons from The Wise Men
However, I do think they were very wise scholars and we can learn a few things from the wise men.
From the Wise Men we learn:
the value of studying the word of God.
how stepping out in faith can lead to incredible things.
who Jesus is from the gifts they brought him.
So it’s still important for all of us (children too) to be aware of what the wise men did and the significance of the gifts they brought.
Gold – highly valued and symbolized Jesus’ King of the Jews status
Frankincense – an incense that symbolized Jesus as God
Myrrh – An anointing and embalming oil that symbolizes Jesus’ Sacrifice on the Cross as a mortal man
Three Wise Men Craft For Kids
What kid doesn’t like playing dress up? This These Wise Men Craft for kids provides them with fun masks to bring the Three Wise Men alive right there in your own home.
Tape/Glue (tape works best on the Popsicle stick…hot glue if you want to risk it around kids)
Construction Paper (Gold, Red, and Black or Brown)
First, you’re going to gather your materials and print your free Three Wise Men Craft for Kids Template. It’s pretty awesome and it’s free. I’d suggest printing on card stock so that it’s more sturdy in the hands of a child.
Then, you’ll use your template to cut out your turban from the black or brown construction paper, the crown from the yellow, and the nose from the red. Position those on your plate and glue into place.
Cut slits in the plate for the eyes of your mask.
I colored the plate a tan color (it makes the cotton balls show up better).
Add your cotton ball beard.
Tape or hot glue your Popsicle stick in place.
If you’re not sure about kings and you want to remove the crown, you can easily transform your crown to this alternative:
You’re ready to become a Wise Man!
